just saw the Saturday Special Report today in The Straits Times.
It's quite sad, looking at all those ppl in the newspapers. can you imagine going about your life as normal, and the next moment having it crashing down on you?
of course, living in Singapore we've nvr really experienced many natural disasters. hell, i dont think we've even experienced any. fortunately for us [or unfortunately], all natural disasters headed our way were blocked by Indonesia, China, India etc.
i dont think we'd be prepared if we ever experience any type of disaster, natural or not. who would?
i remember the day when the earthquake struck. i was at my student's house giving tuition, when suddenly the floor below me started swaying. i thought it was because i was gonna faint or what, but i wasnt even feeling sick. so i turned to my student and asked,"is the floor moving?"
of course she said yes.
after that, it swayed again and again. i asked, "arent you scared that the building will collapse?"
and she said no.
as an A level geog student, of course i suspected that an earthquake was occuring someplace, somewhere. of course i knew about seismic waves and secondary waves. but Wendy nvr taught us how much it could affect the victims, to such an extent, and even if he did, back then we only took it as yet another annoying fact that we had to memorize for the exams.
it's easy to take for granted the safety and security we have here in Singapore. not that i'm pro-govt, but i think we should at least we thankful that we have leaders that came up with such strict building laws and enforce it.
it's quite heartbreaking to see the photos in the papers today. loss of all the people you've ever known. i dont know what i'd do if i ever experience this type of thing. i guess it's just a matter of being strong and responding to your circumstances.
When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend
Just trust the voice within
And you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
You will learn to begin
To trust the voice within
i didnt even have to read the words, just looking at the photos in the papers were enough to tell me the extent of these victims' grief.
they say a picture's worth a thousand words. and today, i've started to believe it.
it's things like this that will make you wake up one day and cherish life and all that you've got.
